US Justice Department Intervenes in Lawsuit to Halt California's New Electoral Map
The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
